Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden celebrates her birthday on Sunday, and we’re kicking off the festivities early with a look back at a particularly lovely tiara appearance from a recent state banquet.
Nearly three years ago, in the autumn of 2021, the Swedish royal family welcomed the King and Queen of Spain to Stockholm for a state visit. The first day of the visit concluded with a traditional state banquet at the Royal Palace. King Felipe and Queen Letizia (in Queen Ena’s Fleur-de-Lis Tiara) were hosted for the dinner by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia (in the Cameo Tiara). They were also joined by Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Sofia (in her palmette tiara).
For the dinner, Crown Princess Victoria wore a particularly eye-catching ballgown decorated with colorful floral embroidery. It was Victoria’s second public appearance in the Frida Jonsvens dress. She previously wore it in 2020 for a set of formal portraits taken to mark her tenth wedding anniversary.
On the gown, Victoria wore the sash and star of Spain’s Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic, which she received during this state visit. She also wore the star of the Order of the Seraphim and her father’s Royal Family Order.
Victoria added even more sparkle to her ensemble with a selection of diamond and aquamarine jewels from the family collection. The bright blue stones of the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik picked up the color of her father’s RFO ribbon, as well as the blue embroidery on her dress.
Here’s a closer look at the classic diamond and aquamarine kokoshnik. The tiara originally belonged to Victoria’s great-grandmother, Crown Princess Margareta, and was later a favorite piece of her grandmother, Princess Sibylla. The tiara now belongs to Victoria’s aunt, Princess Margaretha of Sweden. Margaretha is now nearly 90 and lives in England, so she has few opportunities to wear the tiara. About a decade ago, she decided to place the tiara in the family’s jewelry vault in Stockholm so that the other ladies of the Bernadotte family could make more use of it. Since then, it’s been worn often by Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine, as well as by Princess Christina.
The kokoshnik features vertical columns of diamond brilliants set in the center of lattice-work detailing between the tiara’s large aquamarines. The rest of Victoria’s jewelry for the banquet played off that “line of diamonds” theme. She wore the diamond earrings from the Braganza Parure, which are sort of an interesting half-hoop design, as well as a simple, classic diamond necklace.
She secured her order sash with the family’s Diamond Lozenge Brooch, which also features a neat line of three large round diamonds across the center of its design.
One thing I really love about Swedish royal banquets is the fact that they allow photographers to get really close to the jewels, which yields all kinds of interesting images, including views of the back of pieces. This angle shows some of the back of the tiara, and it emphasizes the yellow gold setting of its aquamarines. It also shows off the unique shape off the earrings, and even gives us a view of the little clasp of the diamond necklace.
