The Olympic sparkle continued in Paris on Friday, as royals from across Europe attended the grand opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Games along the Seine in Paris.
Ahead of the opening ceremony on Friday evening, President and Madame Macron hosted a reception at the Élysée Palace, with several royals once again in attendance. Here, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg are pictured alongside their hosts as they arrived for the reception. Henri has been an IOC member since 1998.
Maria Teresa wore black and white for the reception and the opening ceremony afterward, accessorized with a long pair of sparkling pendant earrings.
King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark posed alongside King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians as they arrived for the reception. Frederik is now an honorary IOC member, having previously served as a member from 2009 until 2021.
Queen Mary dressed in patriotic colors for the reception and the opening ceremony, wearing a red blouse with white trousers. She accessorized with gold and diamonds, including slender hoop earrings and a trio of necklaces. One necklace features the letter “F” (for Frederik) in diamonds, while a second necklace features a gold letter “M” pendant with a diamond accent. UFO No More tells us that the M pendant comes from Dulong.
Queen Mathilde also opted for an outfit emphasizing her nation’s colors, wearing a red ensemble with a pair of her signature gold statement earrings.
From the reception, many of the royals headed directly to the Trocadero for the opening ceremony. Here’s a look at Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco, both Olympic athletes, posing in front of the Eiffel Tower just before the start of the ceremony. Albert has also been an IOC member since 1985. (The only longer-serving member on the committee is Princess Nora, a younger sister of the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein.) Charlene and Albert’s children, Gabriella and Jacques, also attended the opening ceremony with their parents.
The Royal Couturier tells us that Charlene’s white jumpsuit is from Louis Vuitton, another nice little nod to the French hosts of this year’s Olympics. She also wore an impressive pair of diamond cluster stud earrings.
King Felipe VI, also an Olympic athlete, was joined by Queen Letizia for the opening ceremony. She wore an elegant Carolina Herrera dress from her wardrobe archives, paired with her diamond floral earrings from Harry Winston.
And King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands was joined by Queen Maxima for the opening ceremony as well. She opted for an Olympic t-shirt and blazer for the rainy ceremony in Paris.
She also emphasized the orange color that is so emblematic of the Dutch and their monarchy, wearing a pair of floral button earrings that appear to be set with citrines.
