The royals continued their Holyrood Week program today, attending the Order of the Thistle service in Edinburgh. And underneath those heavy velvet robes, Queen Camilla snuck in a throwback jewelry surprise!
The King was joined by the Queen, the Duke of Rothesay (as the Prince of Wales is known when in Scotland), and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh for the Thistle service at St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh on Wednesday. Queen Camilla and Prince Edward were installed as a lady and a royal knight of the order during the service.
Queen Camilla wore the robes, hat, and collar of the order during the service with a long, flowing white evening gown. We also caught a glimpse of silver shoes she arrived at the cathedral.
She accessorized with a pair of pearl drop earrings that just peeked out from beneath her hair.
If you look close enough, Queen Camilla also wore another interesting jewelry piece with her ensemble for the service. See the hint of diamonds just visible beneath the collar of her robes?
Here’s a closer view, showing that Camilla wore a necklace featuring pavĂ©-set diamond flowers interspersed with yellow gold links.
The necklace has been in Camilla’s collection for more than a quarter of a century. Above, she wears it as she arrives for a 50th birthday party given in her honor by the then-Prince of Wales at Highgrove in July 1997. It’s been reported that the necklace was Charles’s birthday gift to Camilla to mark the occasion.
Camilla wore the necklace occasionally in the years before and after her royal wedding. Here, she wears the necklace as she chats with Jamie Oliver during a dinner at Clarence House in September 2003.
The reappearance of the diamond flower necklace made me go back and look again at the pair of diamond flower earrings that Queen Camilla wore on day three of this year’s Royal Ascot race meeting. The pieces certainly look to me like they might be part of a matching demi-parure. What do you think?
The Duchess of Edinburgh was also on hand for her husband’s installation at the Thistle service. She wore a pale pink dress and a dramatic hat with a floral pattern under the brim.
She added a few jeweled touches with her diamond hoop earrings, a necklace with a blue gemstone pendant, and some delicate bracelets.
If the jewels look very familiar, that’s because Sophie wore them yesterday for the garden party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. We also saw her wear the earrings for an appearance at Royal Ascot last month, on a day which also happened to be her 25th wedding anniversary.
