King Charles and Queen Camilla headed to the rainy Bailiwick of Jersey on Monday for the start of two days of visits to the Channel Islands, and Camilla packed diamonds and turquoises in her case for the occasion.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in St Helier, the capital of the island of Jersey, on Monday. They began their visit with a stop in Royal Square, where they were present for special sittings of the States Assembly and Royal Court. Jersey and its neighbor, Guernsey, are both self-governing British Crown Dependencies with Charles III as their sovereign.
The program was packed with events that were dampened a bit by the rain, including a stop at the Jersey Expo Event in Weighbridge Place, a tea party, and the presentation of The King’s Colour in Liberation Square.
For the visit, Queen Camilla wore a light blue dress from one of her favorite designers, Anna Valentine, and a (much-needed) classic trench coat.
She accessorized with some interesting pieces of jewelry as well. Along with her usual necklaces and bracelets, she wore a pair of large diamond and turquoise clip earrings. These are the same ones that we recently saw her wear at Royal Ascot with Queen Mary’s Turquoise Brooch.
Camilla also pinned a petite diamond ribbon brooch to her dress. The brooch features a ribbon design twisted into a trefoil shape, with tiny little diamond tassels at the end of each ribbon section.
Here’s a closer view of the brooch. I’m not sure that we have been given any detailed information about the piece–it doesn’t ring immediate historical bells with me, though that doesn’t really mean anything–but we have seen Camilla wear it recently. She donned it at the end of June for a memorial service for the 6th Baron Hindlip. Queen Camilla was a childhood friend of Lord Hindlip’s wife, Fiona, who passed away in 2014. (Lord Hindlip’s daughters are the television presenters Kirstie Allsopp and Sofie Allsopp.)
The appearance of the brooch at Lord Hindlip’s memorial does raise some possibilities regarding its provenance. For many years, he was chairman of Christie’s International. Perhaps the jewel might have been an auction acquisition or a gift from the Allsopps?
Here’s one more view of Camilla wearing the earrings and brooch in Jersey during a brief break in the rain earlier today.
Charles and Camilla are scheduled to continue their Channel Islands visit tomorrow in Guernsey, and I’ll see you back here if we get any special sparkle from Camilla on that occasion. If not, I’ll be back here on Wednesday for the State Opening of Parliament!
