Today in the Netherlands, the Dutch royal family gathered in The Hague for Prinsjesdag, and there were plenty of sparkling royal jewels–including Queen Juliana’s fabulous aquamarines!–on display.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima arrived for the opening of the nation’s parliament, known as Prinsjesdag (or “Budget Day”), in The Hague on Tuesday. They were joined by their eldest daughter, Princess Amalia, who is the heir to the throne.
During the Prinsjesdag ceremony, King Willem-Alexander delivers a speech from the throne in the Royal Theatre, outlining the government’s plans for the coming year.
Afterward, the royal family greets the gathered crowds from the balcony of Noordeinde Palace. This year, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima were joined by their two elder daughters, Princesses Amalia and Alexia, and by his brother and sister-in-law, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien.
The fashion and jewelry choices for Prinsjesdag are always particularly interesting, because the event has a daytime formal dress code. That means that the ladies of the family wear long, evening-style dresses with daytime accessories like gloves and hats, plus their order sashes and stars. The jewelry choices are also usually a mix of pieces we see in both the day and evening. This year, Queen Máxima wore an ice blue evening gown from a favorite designer, Claes Iversen. She paired the dress, which has a large bow detail on the shoulder, with a matching hat and metallic accessories.
She added sparkle with several pieces from the married parure of aquamarine jewels assembled in the twentieth century by the King’s grandmother, Queen Juliana. For the ceremony, Máxima wore the briolette drop earrings, which were a wedding gift to Juliana from her mother-in-law in 1937. She also pinned the suite’s rectangular brooch, a wedding gift to Juliana from her husband, Prince Bernhard, to the belt detail on her gown. She finished off the look with bracelets and her own aquamarine ring.
Princess Amalia was a bombshell in a dark green Safiyaa gown with dramatic medieval-inspired sleeves for the event, paired with lots of gold jewelry and accessories. Josine Droogendijk, who runs the ModeKoninginMaxima website, shared that the golden headband that Amalia wore comes from the brand Bijoux Brigitte (and retails for less than ten euros!).
Amalia also wore gold earrings, gold bracelets on both wrists, and gold rings on both hands. Here’s a look at some of the jewelry during the balcony appearance.
Amalia’s younger sister, Princess Alexia, wore bright scarlet red for the ceremony. The bright blue and gold sash of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands provided a striking contrast to the dress, which comes from Queen Máxima’s wardrobe archive.
The accessories that Alexia chose for Prinsjesdag this year were also modern ones: sparkling statement earrings, plus a necklace with a charm in the shape of a smiley face. Eagle-eyed royal watchers also spotted an Apple Watch peeking out from one of the sleeves of her dress.
The King’s sister-in-law, Princess Laurentien, is particularly well known for her bold fashion choices. This year she wore a bright pink dress and matching hat for Prinsjesdag, paired with diamond and kunzite earrings and a coordinating brooch. Both the earrings and brooch are often worn by Queen Máxima–in fact, we discussed a recent appearance by Máxima in the same earrings earlier this morning! Princess Laurentien wore the same combination of jewels for Prinsjesdag back in September 2019.
