The Princess of Wales made a surprise visit to Southport on Thursday, wearing golden earrings from her collection for a meeting with members of the community in the wake of this summer’s tragedy.
Prince William and Princess Catherine visited Southport Community Centre on Thursday, speaking with community leaders and first responders affected by the attack on a children’s dance class in July. Three young girls were killed and ten more people, including eight children, were physically injured in the attack.
The visit by the Prince and Princess to Southport follows up on earlier messages of condolences sent by the couple to the community in the wake of the tragedy. The entire royal family has been focused on lending support in recent months. The King visited Southport in person in August and later held a private meeting with the bereaved families at Clarence House in London. William and Kate also met with the families privately, away from cameras and reporters, during Thursday’s visit in Southport as well.
Kate was not originally scheduled to accompany William to Southport, but she was feeling well enough on the day to join her husband. Royal reporter Chris Ship noted that the visit was coordinated because “the prince and princess wanted to tell the whole community in Southport that they had not been forgotten.”
For the community center visit, Kate wore a burgundy-colored dress with small white polka dots, paired with a brown coat and a matching brown bag and shoes.
She accessorized with a pair of gold fern leaf earrings from the British designer Catherine Zoraida.
The earrings have been in Kate’s jewelry box for several years. One of her most notable appearances in the earrings came in May 2023, when she wore them to attend the Children’s Picnic at the Chelsea Flower Show.
A glimpse of the princess’s hand during the community center visit revealed that she has still not returned to wearing her famous diamond and sapphire engagement ring, which has been a fixture on her left hand since her engagement in 2010. In recent months, we’ve seen her go without the ring. We most recently saw her wear it at Wimbledon in July, but on that occasion, photographs showed the heavy ring turning on her finger, suggesting that it might be too big to comfortably wear at the moment.
Over the past few months, we’ve spotted Kate wearing a new eternity-style ring, featuring alternating diamonds and colored gemstones, in place of her engagement ring. A close-up of her hands from Thursday’s engagement showed her wearing four rings: two diamond eternity bands, the new eternity ring with colored gems, and her Welsh gold wedding ring.
