It’s time once again for the Princess of Asturias Awards, which take place over several days of celebrations in Oviedo. The Princess of Asturias herself headed to Oviedo on Thursday, wearing a pair of favorite earrings from her mother’s jewelry box.
Princess Leonor, who has been Princess of Asturias since her father’s accession in 2014, attended two events in Oviedo connected to the annual awards on Thursday. At City Hall, she was made Honorary Mayoress of Oviedo, the capital city of the principality. The city is important to Leonor not only because of her princely title but also because her mother, Queen Letizia, was born there in 1972.
Leonor also headed to the historic library at the University of Oviedo for the presentation of the Medal of Asturias, the highest civil decoration awarded by the principality. This year, Leonor herself was the recipient of the medal. Her father, King Felipe VI, received the same award when he was Prince of Asturias in 1986. Both Felipe and Letizia received the medal in conjunction with their eighteenth birthdays.
For the day of engagements in Oviedo, Leonor wore a crisp white trouser suit with black accessories, reminiscent of the one she wore during the celebrations of her 18th birthday in Madrid last October. The suit is also a throwback to her mother’s signature style, debuted to the public during her royal engagement announcement in 2003. (Update: Or maybe it’s very light blue! Either way, it’s crisp!)
With the trouser suit, Leonor carried a walking stick, similar to the one that her father often carries during the commemorations of the the Feast of St. James in Santiago de Compostela.
With the white suit, Leonor wore a pair of earrings that will be very familiar to those who have followed the jewelry of her mother, Queen Letizia, over the past decade.
These are the Double Dagger earrings from the brand Gold & Roses. The jacket-style earrings feature small pavé-set diamonds in their design.
Leonor borrowed the earrings from her mother, Queen Letizia, who has worn them on a whole range of public engagements over the years. Above, Letizia wears the earrings in Madrid in 2017.
Leonor also mimicked another of her mother’s signature jewelry pieces, wearing a ring on the index finger of her right hand.
The chunky metallic ring features a wave design. It’s tough to tell in the light exactly which metal was used in its creation. Here, in an outdoor shot, it looks like it might be gold.
Here’s one more view of Leonor wearing the Double Dagger earrings in Asturias on Thursday. Interestingly, the last time we saw her wear a white suit for a major milestone, she also wore a different pair of borrowed Gold & Roses earrings from her mother’s collection. There will be more royal moments during the awards celebrations over the next few days, and I’ll be covering the events early next week at The Court Jeweller. Stay tuned!
