Last week, the Queen of Denmark sparkled in modern diamond jewels–and a fascinating ring–for an important anniversary celebration in Copenhagen.
King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark arrived at Vega, a concert venue in Copenhagen, last Tuesday for a musical celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Kronprinsparrets Priser (the Crown Prince Couple Awards). The awards, launched shortly after their royal wedding in 2004, recognize excellent work in the fields of art, culture, and social work. All of the previous recipients of the prizes were invited to the anniversary celebration.
Now that Frederik and Mary are King and Queen, the name of the prizes will be changing, too. Going forward, they’ll be known as the Kongeparrets Priser. During the recent celebration, the King and Queen offered thoughts on the upcoming change: “Tonight we say goodbye to the Crown Prince Couple Awards and welcome something new. Because it doesn’t end here for us. We have new titles, but we carry our values with us. Therefore, we will continue to support social initiatives, art and culture and communities that bind us together. We will pay tribute to those who captivate, excite and move us. We will stick to a prize for art and culture and a prize for social initiatives, and as something new in 2025 we will introduce a prize for communities.”
For the celebration, Queen Mary wore a sleek black tuxedo-style jumpsuit. Per UFO No More, it comes from Max Mara. She added pops of color with yellow shoes and a coordinating clutch bag. She added even more modern flair with a new pair of diamond earrings, the Lumi Chandelier Earrings, from the designer Julie Sandlau. The earrings, interestingly, can be purchased either individually or together as a pair.
The designer’s website describes the earrings, which retail for €16,000, as follows: “This unique Lumi Chandelier symbolizes the power of light and serves as the essential core of our Lumi collection. This piece of jewelry is adorned with Top Wesselton diamonds set in 100% recycled 18 karat gold, creating an elegant finish with its satin-smooth surface. The earrings feature long stiletto strings of size-graduated 2.72 carat diamonds mounted in a gold bezel setting, providing them with an almost unheard-of flexibility.” (“Top Wesselton” is an old term used when grading diamonds, referencing stones that fall into the “fine white” color scale, corresponding to the GIA grade of G [near colorless].)
Mary also wore rings on both hands, including a cocktail ring on her right hand that features a bright yellow central gemstone in a lacy white diamond setting. You can just see the side of the ring peeking out from beneath her cards in this photograph.
We’ve seen Mary wear the ring on several previous occasions, including appearances at Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee concert and during a memorable moment when she and Frederik headed to the Netherlands for a gala dinner with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima in The Hague in 2022. The ring is visible on Mary’s right hand in this photograph, taken as she greeted Máxima ahead of the event. She wore the same shoes on that occasion as well.
The choice of the ring ties together the yellow shoes and the yellow handbag, as well as the recycled yellow gold used to make the setting of her new earrings.
