I’ve got a bonus article for you today as we prepare for this weekend’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations, featuring the jewels worn by the Duchess of Gloucester at the Field of Remembrance.
The Duchess headed to Westminster Abbey in London on Thursday for a visit to the Field of Remembrance, a field of poppies on crosses, grouped together by regiment or arm of the Armed Forces. The field has been organized by the Poppy Factory every year since 1928. Queen Camilla was due to make an appearance at the installation today, but due to her recent illness, Birgitte stepped in.
For the visit, Birgitte wore a dark coat, boots, and hat with military-inspired details, softened by the use of some classic pieces of jewelry.
To the ensemble, she added a pair of floral earrings from her collection, which feature a blossom situated atop a gold spray of leaves.
Here’s a closer look at the flower, with its carved petals and central diamond, as well as the golden leaf detailing. Birgitte has had these in her collection for years.
There were also pearls–a smaller strand and a larger one, judging by the images available–peeking out slightly from the collar of the Duchess’s coat. And, of course, she wore a pair of military badges. These are the cap badges of The Rifles and the Adjutant General’s Corps. Birgitte is the Royal Colonel of the 7th Battalion of The Rifles, and last year she was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Adjutant General’s Corps.
On Thursday evening, Birgitte also helped to host a reception at Buckingham Palace for medalists from the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.
For that event, she changed into a blue skirt suit. She accessorized with a pair of earrings set with multi-colored gemstones, plus a strand of silver-black pearls worn with a special pendant. The lozenge-shaped pendant features blue enamel, diamonds, and pearls. The royal cypher in the center of the jewel is Queen Victoria’s imperial monogram.
Other royals, including the King and the Princess Royal, were at the reception as well. Princess Anne wore her mother’s iconic three-stranded pearl necklace with pearl earrings, a Team GB Olympic pin, and a poppy brooch.
A reminder: along with our usual Saturday morning article over at Hidden Gems, I’ll be back here this weekend with coverage of the Festival of Remembrance and Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph.
