Christmas cheer rang out through the halls of the Royal Palace in Stockholm this week, as Queen Silvia and her grandchildren received a traditional Christmas tree delivery.
It’s been a challenging few weeks for the royal family in Sweden, with the death of Princess Birgitta coming just ahead of the demanding schedule of the Nobel Prize celebrations. The King’s sister was laid to rest in a private ceremony on Sunday, and on Monday, Queen Silvia’s heart had a little respite when her eight grandchildren joined her as she received this year’s Christmas trees at the Royal Palace.
Queen Silvia was surrounded by Crown Princess Victoria’s children, Princess Estelle (12) and Prince Oscar (8); Prince Carl Philip’s sons, Prince Alexander (8), Prince Gabriel (7), and Prince Julian (3); and Princess Madeleine’s children, Princess Leonore (10), Prince Nicolas (9), and Princess Adrienne (6) for the official Christmas tree presentation. The trees were brought to the palace by representatives from the Forestry University’s student union, who are pictured here with the Queen and her grandchildren.
After the trees had been delivered, it was time for a little decorating. Here, little Prince Julian, who is due to become a big brother in February, chooses an ornament from a basket held by his grandmother while Prince Oscar, Princess Estelle, Prince Gabriel, and Prince Alexander wait for their turns.
And here, the royal grandkids pitch in to help hang the ornaments on the trees. Twelve-year-old Princess Estelle, who will one day be Queen of Sweden, is the tallest at the moment, so she placed baubles near the top branches. Nearby, Princess Leonore focuses on preparing a gold ornament to add to the tree.
Queen Silvia dressed comfortably in a white sweater, black jacket, and black trousers for the tree delivery and decoration. She added small pearl stud earrings to the ensemble, as well as gold bracelets and a brooch that coordinated with the buttons on her jacket.
The modern gold bar brooch also has a single pearl set in the center of the jewel, echoing the Queen’s choice of earrings for the occasion. The design of the brooch looks a little like shooting stars to me—a fitting motif for a Christmas moment if so.
