The tenth of December is always a special day for tiaras, but this year we got a little sparkling bonus: a state banquet in Amsterdam! Here’s a look at the royal jewels that Queen Maxima and Princess Amalia wore to host the President of Portugal.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived in Amsterdam on Tuesday for the start of a state visit with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands. After a day full of engagements, the royals hosted a state banquet for their presidential guest at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. The Princess of Orange, Willem-Alexander and Maxima’s eldest daughter and heir to the throne, was also present for the white-tie dinner.
Queen Maxima headed to her closet to choose an ensemble for the state banquet, selecting a red gown with an ombre zig-zag pattern from Jan Taminiau. She’s worn the dress on previous occasions, including a memorable outing for the banquet following the imperial enthronement in Japan in October 2019. This time around, she paired the dress with the collar of Portugal’s Order of Christ.
Maxima added even more red tones by choosing jewelry pieces from one of the Dutch royal family’s ruby parures. Her tiara, necklace, and earrings all come from the Mellerio Ruby Parure. The nineteenth-century suite of jewelry is particularly appropriate for a December gala event, because it was originally a Christmas present from King Willem III to Queen Emma in 1888.
Maxima also wore the bracelet from the parure on her left wrist and added a ruby and diamond cluster ring on her right hand. We saw her wear jewels from the same set almost exactly a year ago, when the Dutch royals hosted the President of South Korea for a state visit.
Princess Amalia sparkled beside her father as the royals arrived for the state banquet, wearing a shimmering purple gala gown with a dramatic cape detail. ModeKoninginMaxima tells us that the dress comes from Tadashi Shoji. She added the red sash and gold star of Portugal’s Order of Christ, given to her during this state visit, to the outfit as well.
Amalia opted to wear diamonds with the dress, including the starry diadem that her mother, Queen Maxima, wore as a bridal tiara back in February 2002. The star tiara is a second setting of the Dutch Pearl Button Tiara, with antique diamond stars from Queen Emma’s collection mounted on the tiara’s festoon base. This is the same tiara that Amalia wore for her very first tiara event, the big birthday gala in Oslo in 2022.
Amalia’s earrings, comprised of a pair of diamond cluster studs from which diamond drops are suspended, also come from the family vaults. She completed the look with a diamond necklace, a diamond ring on her left hand, a diamond and aquamarine ring on her right, and a special diamond bracelet from the family vaults. This is the smaller of the two bracelets made by dividing up the much larger Dutch East Indies Bracelet, which was given to Amalia’s great-grandmother, Queen Juliana, as a wedding present in 1937.
We’ve got even more sparkle on the horizon, with the King’s Dinner for the Nobel laureates scheduled to take place later today in Stockholm. See you then for even more tiaras!
