We’re slinking into a new week with a look at a fascinating piece of jewelry worn recently by Queen Máxima: a slithery serpent brooch!

On January 21, Queen Máxima arrived at Royal Jaarbeurs, a convention center in Utrecht, for the start of the National Education Exhibition. During the opening plenary session of the exhibition, Máxima gave a speech in connection with her role as honorary patron of MindUs, an organization that develops programs to support the mental health of young people.

For the exhibition opening, Máxima wore a grassy green ensemble, pairing a top and skirt from Natan with neutral accessories and statement jewels.

A pair of diamond cluster stud earrings glittered in Máxima’s ears. These come from the royal vaults, and they can be worn both with and without pendants. (You can see the bale that accommodates a pendant in this photograph if you look closely.) We saw Máxima wear these recently for her trip to a sugar beet factory as well.

But it was the brooch that Máxima pinned to her top that was the real showstopper of the outfit. ModeKoninginMaxima tells us that the playful snake jewel is a vintage piece that was recently added to the Queen’s personal jewelry collection. Máxima has long been a fan of snake jewelry. Her collection also includes an enormous pair of snake earrings and a snake-inspired ring.

Josine notes, “The enamel and glass piece of jewellery is a vintage design by the British brand Sardi, which was founded in 1974 and is known for its colourful costume jewellery.”

There was even more sparkle on Máxima’s hands and wrists. She wore engagement and wedding rings on her left hand, plus her cabochon gemstone bracelet (which is engraved with her husband and daughters’ names) and another gold charm bracelet stacked with her watch on her left wrist. On her right wrist, she wore a diamond-tipped gold Le Cube bangle from Dinh Van. And there was a big statement piece on her right hand: an enormous cocktail ring from Steltman. The ring, which comes from the company’s Safari collection, is set with a large peridot.
