The Emperor of Japan celebrated a milestone birthday this weekend, and the ladies of the imperial family joined in the festivities with a quartet of lovely brooches.

Members of the imperial family joined Emperor Naruhito on Sunday as he greeted well-wishers outside the palace on his 65th birthday. The Emperor was joined by his wife, Empress Masako, and their daughter, Princess Aiko, as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, and their daughter, Princess Kako.

Empress Masako wore a favorite blue velvet dress with elaborate embroidery for the occasion, paired with pearl and diamond jewelry.

With her modern pearl drop earrings, she wore a pearl and diamond brooch with floral and ribbon designs. The piece, like so many Japanese imperial jewels, looks like a midcentury (or at least midcentury-inspired) jewel.

Princess Aiko wore a light blue ensemble for the balcony appearance, paired with pearl and diamond earrings, a strand of pearls, and an intriguing brooch.

Here’s a slightly better view of the brooch, which appears to be made of silver-toned metal and set with pearls in a floral design that I think might be inspired by lily of the valley. The piece culminates in a bright blue faceted gemstone drop, perhaps a sapphire or tanzanite.

The crown princely couple was also elegant during the balcony appearance. Crown Princess Kiko opted for an ensemble in a classic shade of blush beige.

She wore pearl drop earrings and a pearl necklace, plus a silver-toned brooch set with pearls. The brooch features two flowers with pearl centers.

Florals really were the name of the game for the family on Sunday. Princess Kako wore a yellow dress with a subtle white floral pattern for the balcony appearance, accessorized with more diamond and pearl jewelry.

She wore petite pearl drop earrings and a strand of pearls, plus a diamond ribbon brooch with a pearl set in the center of the stylized bow.
