This week brought us even more state visit jewels in Europe, with Queen Mary of Denmark wearing a mix of heirloom pieces and modern jewels during the Danish state visit to France.

King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark arrived in Paris on Monday to begin a state visit with President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron. The two heads of state have met before, and they helpfully share a major common language. King Frederik’s father, Prince Henrik, was French, and one of his first diplomatic postings during his tenure as Crown Prince was at the Danish embassy in Paris.

Queen Mary was elegant in a cream-colored Dior skirt suit for the official welcome ceremony in Paris, paired with black accessories and some special pearl and diamond jewelry pieces.

The pearl and diamond cluster earrings and pearl and diamond cluster brooch that Mary wore for the first event of the state visit both come from a married parure of jewelry assembled in the nineteenth century by Queen Lovisa of Denmark. The earrings are the top section of the pair made by repurposing pendants from Queen Lovisa’s diamond and pearl necklace, which was a wedding gift from the Khedive of Egypt in 1869. The brooch was also a wedding gift, presented to Lovisa by two of her new in-laws, Emperor Alexander III and Empress Marie Feodorovna of Russia.

We first saw Mary wear the earrings and brooch a year ago in Oslo, when she attended a state banquet at the Royal Palace during a state visit with King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway.

On Monday evening, the presidential couple hosted a state dinner for their royal guests at the Élysée Palace in Paris. French state dinners have an unusual not-quite-black-tie dress code, with the men in dark suits and the women in evening gowns with a few pieces of gala jewelry.

While Madame Macron wore a royal blue column gown with sparkling embellishments, Queen Mary opted for a two-piece ensemble that paid tribute to both of her home nations. UFO No More reports that Mary’s embroidered blouse was made by an Australian brand, Clea, her floral skirt was made by the Danish designer Lasse Spangenberg.

Mary also wore statement earrings from another iconic Danish brand, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen. These are their “Gipsy” girandole-style earrings, made of yellow gold and set with diamonds, aquamarines, topazes, coral, and amber.

Mary also owns another pair of girandole earrings from the same brand, featuring stones in cool shades of gray and black. Here, she wears the earrings during a visit to Australia in November 2011.

Other royals also have similar Lynggaard earrings in their jewelry boxes. Princess Sofia of Sweden owns the earrings in two different colorways. Here, she wears a rose gold pair set with diamonds, tourmalines, and moonstones for the wedding of Princess Märtha Louise of Norway and Durek Verrett last August.

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands owns a pair of the Lynggaard earrings, too. Hers feature blue topazes, moonstones, and gray quartz. They’ve also been borrowed on at least one occasion by her eldest daughter, Princess Amalia.
