Today, let’s catch up on an intriguing royal jewelry moment from last week: Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in a stunning new modern flower brooch for the opening of the new Philips headquarters in Amsterdam.

On October 16, Queen Máxima arrived at the new global headquarters of Royal Philips, the health technology company, in Amsterdam. She had been invited to officially open the new facilities, which she did by pressing a digital handprint that started the “heartbeat” of the new headquarters.

For the official opening, Queen Máxima was vibrant in vivid green, wearing a dress from that always-popular Benelux royal couture house, Natan. She paired the dress with dark green accessories, including a dramatic picture hat and a matching clutch bag.

The jewels, though, really made the look this time. Máxima wore an enormous pair of diamond stud earrings from the royal vaults. These belonged to Queen Wilhelmina. Remarkably, they were gifts to the future monarch from her father, King Willem III, to mark her ninth birthday in 1889. The earrings can also be worn with large diamond pendants. (You can see the bale to attach the pendant at the bottom of the earring.)

The earrings are magnificent, but the real show-stopper of the ensemble was Máxima’s new flower brooch. Pinned near her right shoulder, the jewel features five blossoms surrounded by bejeweled buds and leaves.

The brooch was made by the Spanish jewelry firm Luz Camino. They note that the piece is meant to resemble a spray of Philadelphus coronarius, better known as English dogwood or sweet mock orange. Josine Droogendijk shares that the piece is made of “white resin, enamel, diamonds, tsavorites, and chrome diopside.” Máxima also owns a pair of earrings from the same designer.

Máxima didn’t overwhelm the brooch with additional jewelry. Even her signature bracelets were more strictly curated, with just a pair of delicate gold bracelets worn with her watch and her gold and cabochon family bracelet on her right wrist. She also wore her engagement and wedding rings, plus a diamond ring on her right hand. The classic emerald-cut diamond ring was a gift from King Willem-Alexander in 2007 to mark the birth of their third daughter, Princess Ariane.
